Design and build

You will love the OnePlus 9’s classy design, and that it shares even with the Pro version. There are the glossy back and the metallic edging. There’s the neat camera unit. And you will also really love it in whatsoever color options to choose from Winter Mist, Arctic Sky, and Astral Black. Its screen doesn’t curve at the edges almost like what Samsung did with its Galaxy S21 Series high-end phones. The phone does not have any official waterproof rating. A trade-off for its price in Kenya is something you can live with. Or at least we can.

Cameras

I argue that the OnePlus 9 Pro’s camera is decent, but it is not up there with the Samsung Galaxy S21 or iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, the company’s partnership with pro camera maker Hasselblad will help these latest handsets do battle with the photography with camera kings’ named above. While the same is still true of this camera, of course, this phone isn’t trying to compete with those elite phones. That said, I think we can be a bit more forgiving. There have still been some compromises from the 9 Pro. It has no optical zoom lens, for example.

You are going to be using these standard and super-wide lenses. And that standard lens has got a smaller image sensor than the one that you’ll find on the 9 Pro. You probably won’t be able to tell much difference because this phone does take some really nice photos. It is a great camera for your everyday snaps.

Platform and performance

One would have expected the OnePlus 9 to have a lower-end processor than the 9 Pro. But no Oneplus has included the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor which is an absolute beast. Gaming, photo editing, video streaming, everything gets handled seamlessly and effortlessly. There is nothing you will possibly find that will slow it down at all. It’s a pleasure to use in everyday tasks as well. Thanks in part to the 120 Hertz refresh rate of the screen, which just makes swiping around local buttery smooth. And also the really neat, simple Android 11 based interface. Both of which are also featured on the 9 Pro.

Battery and fast charging

This phone has the same 4,500 mAh battery as the Oneplus 9 Pro yet its battery life is better. And why is that? I will tell you. It is probably all about the screen which is slightly smaller and it has a lower resolution. So that means fewer pixels to light up and therefore less of a drain on battery life. Don’t worry if you hammer the battery because the OnePlus 9 supports this same 65W fast charging as the Pro version.

It will take your phone from empty to full in about 30 minutes. Even better is that the 65W charger actually comes in the box so you won’t need to troll our website trying to find a compatible third-party Oneplus charger. It supports wireless charging too, although it does not support the 50W fast wireless charging that OnePlus has put into the 9 Pro. I don’t think that’s much of a big loss and for the lower price.

Final remarks

The OnePlus 9 might not share the “Pro” name of its bigger brother, but it packs almost everything that’s exciting about the latter. And to add the icing on the cake, it comes at a more affordable price. The onePlus 9 is cheaper than the 9 Pro but just as powerful. It’s got a great camera for most of your everyday snaps and its battery puts up more of a fight. In short, it is a superb do-it phone that won’t break the bank.
