Intro
Samsung’s new foldable phone is official and it’s called the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. At Samsung unpacked, there were a lot of new phones. But the Z Fold 2 was probably the most interesting one because we didn’t get that much information on it. We are going to expect more details in the coming month. But let’s run through everything we know about the displays, the cameras, durability, and more. Visit the official product website to find out more.
Comparison
Let’s talk about how that compares to the original based on the information that Samsung has given up. First up the screens on the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is bigger on the inside and out. There is no longer a camera notch when you open up the fold for that front-facing selfie camera. Instead, now it is just a hole punch design on the inside as well as on the front display as well.
The bezels themselves are also so much smaller on the new phone compared to the original fold. The original Galaxy Fold was also rated by Samsung to withstand 200,000 folds. We don’t know if the new one has an official rating or just how durable it will be. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is such an interesting device because it is the second time around for Samsung’s foldable range.
The original phone did have some durability issues and of course, some screen issues that resulted in a complete redesign and a five-month delay between when it was first announced and when it was finally available to go on sale.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 displays
First, let’s look at the displays. So now on the front, when you have Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 closed, it has a 6.2-inch display. Open it up and you’ll get the 7.6-inch display on the inside. That 7.6 inches Dynamic AMOLED internal display will also have a 120 Hertz refresh rate. The foldable display uses ultra-thin glass, which is similar to what’s on the Z flip. But the version on the Z fold 2 is thinner than a human hair.
And Samsung says the display should remain flexible even in high or low temperatures. And the display itself is pretty much edge to edge. The bezels are significantly smaller than those that we saw on the original Galaxy Z Fold. The gap between the screens when fold 2 is closed has also been reduced. So there’s less chance that dust gets into the screen itself. But we will talk about the hinge in just a little bit, cause that’s a really important part of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.
Cameras
Now there is no official word on the camera specs just yet. But it does look likely that they’re the same as the galaxy note 20. So that’s a 12 megapixel wide and ultra-wide camera with a 64-megapixel telephoto. As for the battery. It’s a 4500 mAh dual battery, just like the original fold. And the US model will be 5G.
The main camera is that 12 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 1/1.76″, 1.8µm, Dual Pixel PDAF lens. Then there is a 64 MP, f/2.0, (telephoto), 1/1.72″, 0.8µm, PDAF, OIS, 3x optical zoom, 30x hybrid zoom lens. The third and final lens is a 12 MP shooter with f/2.2, 13mm (ultrawide), 1/2.55″, 1.4µm, PDAF, and Super Steady video.
Let us back up for a moment. When the Galaxy S20 Series was released, 8K@24fps video recording was a big talking point although it wasn’t received with so much enthusiasm. But Samsung has stuck with it here also, which is great by the way given you can still choose the video quality even 4K@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60/240fps, and so on.
Whilst recording you also get access to HDR10+, stereo sound rec., gyro-EIS & OIS. The selfie camera of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 is a 10 MP, f/2.2, 26mm wide shooter. You may also want to check out Oppo Reno Z‘s cameras. Video recording with the selfie camera is also up to 4K@30/60fps.
Design, durability, and hinges
Let’s talk about that hinge because that is the key to what makes the fold line so special. Samsung calls it the hideaway hinge. Now it’s essentially a series of mechanisms involving cams and some brushes to help stop debris from entering into the mechanism. We first saw it on the Z flip from this year. The key part about the hinge that was so innovative for so many people was the fact that it can hold the phone open at pretty much whatever degree or angle that you want it to be open.
For different viewability. Say, if you wanted to take a selfie with the screen standing up or just sit and watch a movie hands-free. You can tilt it to whatever angle you like. Now, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 can also do this as well with that hinge. So that’s everything we do know about Z folds 2. But there’s a lot of things that are still up in the air.
Final remarks
It’s also going to be so interesting to see where this phone sits compared to a lot of the other foldable in the market. In 2019, it was just pretty much Samsung for a lot of the year. But 2020, a few more devices are coming out or that have been released that will present some stiff competition, including the Huawei Mate XS and the forthcoming Microsoft Surface Zero, which we are expecting pretty much any day now.
That’s everything we know so far about the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, but there will be more details and a preorder starting on September one. If you want to find out more details about the rest of the devices that Samsung has released and unpacked, make sure to go check out the link below.
