Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite

It is here, the lite version of Xiaomi’s Mi 8. Announced and in September of 2018 this was among the last releases by Xiaomi of that year. In it a mid-range smartphone- made to be affordable without compromising (too much) on features and specifications. It is also an option for those who find the Mi 8 costly and or love the Mi 8 but fancy a bigger display. This article will describe the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite in depth with the goal of making you understand it better for ease of making purchase decisions. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is also known as Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth (Mi 8X) – keep that in mind

Design and build

Xiaomi nails the design of the phones every other time. Would you believe me when I say that this one comes with a glass front and back (not wireless charging though) and aluminum frames? That’s right. Gone are the days of plastic phones, Xiaomi will either give you metal or glass. And when it comes to glass, you should expect more. It is a beauty I have to mention. I love how light bounces and reflects on that back panel. And still it only weighs about 169 grams.

The back has a primary camera in horizontal orientation (the Mi 8 has it in vertical), that rear mounted fingerprint scanner and MI logo. You don’t want to keep a glass back busy with lots of nonsense.

Facing you is its display panel with a notch up top that houses the selfie camera, sensors and call speaker at its head. The chin has been reduced but it is still very noticeable.

Display

I still feel this display can be a bit brighter especially outdoors but, it isn’t something you won’t be able to live with really. It is a 6.26 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen this one with 1080 x 2280 pixels resolution and 403 ppi density.

Be made aware that there are 16M colors here, it rests on a 97.8 cm2 surface area, has a~82.5% screen-to-body ratio, 19:9 aspect ratio and supports Multi touch – of course. A decent display it is on a phone at this price bracket, although I still put emphasis on the outdoor brightness feature. That aside though it proves very competitive for the price you will pick it for.

Camera

On very rare occasions do I start by discussing the selfie camera. When I do, it must be for a reason. Either it is so impressive I cannot wait or it is so poor, I still cannot wait. The former is the case here. Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite has a super impressive selfie camera. It is a 24 MP Auto HDR lens that shoots 1080p@30fps videos. When you are not directly exposed to bright light this camera will take sharp images with great color and a lot of detail. Else images will be over exposed. I love this one better.

Then there is the dual 12 MP, f/1.9 with a 5MP, f/2.0 lens that is yet another performer. Yes it can shoot 4K Videos except for image stabilization is only available for 1080p@30fps (gyro-EIS) shots. Overall it scores highly in both video and image production.

Performance and memory

Platform

I am not completely sure how I feel about it running Android 8.1 (Oreo) but I guess updates will be rolled. And it is android with MIUI 10 skin.  On deck is a Qualcomm SDM660 Snapdragon 660 (14 nm) chipset, an Octa-core (4×2.2 GHz Kryo 260 & 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 260) CPU and an Adreno 512 GPU. Snapdragon 660 is a midrange chipset which makes this a midrange smartphone by default.

Memory

There 64/128 GB with 4/6 GB RAM respectively and either internal memories can be expanded using a micro SD card up to 256 GB. Unfortunately you will have to sacrifice that SIM 2 slot for you to enjoy this.

Battery

I am not very impressed by the battery capacity on paper. So this one I would not recommend to heavy users since its non-removable Li-Po 3350 mAh battery only has a 72 hours endurance rating. But if you are a mixed usage person then this one should last at least a day of usage until next charge. And yes there is support for fast battery charging 18W (Quick Charge 3.0) here- a fast charger will be required though.

Pros Cons
  • Bold build
  • Attractive design
  • Good display
  • Impressive selfie camera
  • Good video recording with main camera
  • Snappy experience
  • Relatively small battery capacity
  • A little less bright
