New design

The Tecno Phantom X brings a premium design of curved glass with a sharp aluminum frame and a catchy gradient finish. The surface has a pinstripe texture ashed into it. It doesn’t add a whole lot of grip actually, but feels interesting and hides smudges. If you want even more grip and protection, there’s a cool-looking case that comes in the box. It doesn’t actually cover the edges of the phone. This is probably because of Phantom X’s curved display. It’s a 6.7 inch AMOLED with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Also notable here is the wide cutout for the dual selfie cameras.

Display

One thing that is a surprise here is that Tecno Phantom X comes with a curved display. Curved on the edges that are and this just makes it a beauty to behold, and to hold. It has a noticeable cut-out notch at the top right corner. It is noticeable because it houses its dual selfie camera. What is more, is that this is a 6.7 inch Super AMOLED with a 90Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution display. It surely does not get better than this. Unless of course, it is a 90Hz panel or something.

And though this display is curved, it does have some really slim bezels. That punch hole is totally obtrusive. It may need some getting used to but this is okay. The viewing experience on this screen is great with plenty of sharpness and of course, contrast. Then there’s a reliable under-display fingerprint reader to wake up the phone with.

Platform

Performance is one area where Tecno Phantom X flies. It’s powered by the Mediatek Helio G95 processor. Comparisons on YouTube show that t is faster than the Samsung Galaxy A52 with a Snapdragon 720G processor. And in some cases, it’s faster than the Xiaomi Note 10 Pro with the Snapdragon 732G processor. But hey! Benchmark results don’t translate to how smartphones perform in the real world.

For multitasking Tecno Phantom X comes with 8 GB of RAM. With 8GB RAM, the aforesaid cannot be an issue for the phone. And it isn’t. For gaming. The Phantom X comes with a Mali-G76 MC4 GPU which helps in rendering graphics-intensive games. For the operating system, this one runs on Android 11 with HIOS 7.6. HIOS 7.6 brings a new privacy feature that makes it impossible for someone next to you to read your screen. Oh, and yes, this is a 256GB smartphone still with room for a microSDXC (dedicated slot).

Cameras

Onto the cameras. The Tecno Phantom X has three cameras on the back, a 50-megapixel quad main cam, a 13 megapixel 2x telephoto cam, and an 8-megapixel wide camera. The main’s photos come out at 12.5 megapixels. And the quality isn’t far from impressive. Sharpness is okay for the price and the dynamic range is relatively wide. It’s nice to see a telephoto camera at this price. And its zoom shots are decent.  After the sunset, the 50 MP, f/1.9, (wide)’s performance was much more impressive than during the day. Even in auto mode, there’s some image stacking going on here.

They have enough sharpness and a pretty good dynamic range. The colors are vibrant too. 8-megapixel photos from the ultra-wide camera are luster. They’re soft with a narrow dynamic range. Thankfully the distortion correction does a good job. Because the ultra-wide has autofocus it can also shoot close-up macro photos. The level of detail here is better than competitors which should employ dedicated lower resolution macro cameras.

Battery

The Tecno Phantom X has a 4700 mAh battery inside it. It will definitely last the entire day. With it comes fast charging 33W, which sees this phone charge from 0 to 70% in 30 minutes as advertised. Also important to note is that this is a non-removable battery. Or more accurately called a user non-removable battery.
