Oppo Reno

Over the years Oppo has made known its presence in the smartphone market. This is one of the smartphone companies that has made a name for itself in very few years and even taken a great share of giant smartphone companies’ dominance. This time, Oppo has released yet another flagship smartphone in the Oppo Reno a few months before the also much awaited Oppo Reno 10x Zoom. When the time comes Phone Place Kenya will also review the latter. As at now, Oppo Reno it is. I like to think of it as a teaser even though it does confidently and firmly identify itself for the smartphone it entirely is. This is my descriptive review of Oppo Reno.

Design and build

Now, and this is only but a rumor that the Design team from Oppo was poached by Google after designing the Oppo Reno. The theory goes way back and can also be explained from the official picture used to advertise this phone. That isn’t why we are hear though so in connection to it I will report that Oppo Reno’s design may have been too good Google had to do something about it. That being said I cannot wait to see what the next Pixel smartphone will look like.

The back panel of Oppo Reno has all elements aligned in the middle and in vertical orientation in-line with the strip that goes to the lower bottom and has Oppo branding on it. At its head are two camera lenses. Notice also the curved back panel the rounded corners and the motorized Shark Fin pop up that exposes the selfie camera on the front and led flash on the back. It only pops up you want to snap a pic. As a result, this is a completely bezel-less smartphone (chin slightly thicker though). The fingerprint scanner is underneath the display as opposed to the traditional hardware on the back, front or side. There is no IP rating here for obvious reasons and for it we let Oppo get away with this. Compromise for functionality is great sacrifice. All the same not that we have seen IP rating on previous models.

Display and camera

Display

You will love the AMOLED capacitive touchscreen on Reno. AMOLED is a reputable display panel type with deep blacks and great outdoor visibility. It is 6.4 inches on a 101.0 cm2 and with 86.8% screen-to-body ratio. With it 19.5:9 ratio you get a fairly tall display (box a sellout) of 1080 x 2340 pixels, (~402 ppi density) resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection- it only gets better and better. What you get- a vibrant and impressive display panel to enjoy if not all then a great deal of interactions. Something also worth noting is that this display is DCI-P3 compliant.

Camera

Guess what, the primary camera is a whopping 48 MP, f/1.7, 26mm wide lens and it is supported by a 5 MP, f/2.4, depth sensor. Video recording on it, being a flagship smartphone is 4K (2160p@30fps, 1080p@30/60/120fps) as one would expect and gyro-EIS is on board. Dual-LED flash, HDR, panorama are some of the other add-ons you would not miss here.

Then the selfie camera; a motorized pop-up 16 MP, f/2.0, 26mm that is a wide as well that can shoot in HDR with 1080p@30fps. The camera performance is brilliant here dear reader, and over the years Oppo has been known for a sweet spot with the cameras in all their smartphones- even the most affordable options.

Performance and platform

Platform

Oppo Reno runs Android 9.0 (Pie) with ColorOS 6. ColorOS 6 borrows its inspiration from IOS in many ways as you will notice.

Performance

Oppo Reno is a flagship smartphone yet its performance is mostly high-end with a Qualcomm SDM710 Snapdragon 710 (10 nm) chipset, an Octa-core (2×2.2 GHz Kryo 360 Gold & 6×1.7 GHz Kryo 360 Silver) CPU and an Adreno 616 GPU. Top of the draw okay but maybe Snapdragon’s 800 series would have given many greater joys. Maybe for the sake of pricing, we consider all workable.

Storage and memory

Whereas there is no option for internal storage expansion, you get a beefy 256 G with 6/8 GB RAM or 128 GB with 6 GB RAM. If you ask me. Now that is quite some RAM dear reader.

Battery

To be entirely honest, the battery capacity here takes you to slightly longer hours than other smartphones in its set. It has a Non-removable Li-Po 3765 mAh battery that can be charged using fast battery charging 20W (VOOC Flash Charge) with the right charger. Ps the right charger has been included in the packaging. You also get a free case by the way.

Well if you cannot afford to the “big boys” then Oppo Reno would be a great alternative. Also, if you just do not want to splash so much moneys on a smartphone but still want a super phone with high-end specification and functionality then look no further than Oppo Reno. Stay tunes for the Reno 10x Zoom by the way. In the meantime, this one is available in Ocean Green, Jet Black, Nebula Purple or Pink Mist. It is a smartphone easy to recommend for many reasons.
