Nokia 9 PureView

Smartphone companies are upping up their game recently. This started way back in 2015 with the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge with the curved edge display. Since then we have seen smartphone companies experiment with new ideas as we say on the LG G5 (a modular smartphone), Oppo Find X (a motorized smartphone), Huawei Mate X (a folding smartphone) and the list goes on. Nokia as we know it is not ready to be left out of the race and as a result, the company gave us Nokia 9 PureView, a LIMITED EDITION SMARTPHONE which is 5 cameras (6 actually should we count the front-facing one). This feature will be my main focus of this review so stay tuned and pay attention. When we get there, I shall explain the functions of each of the six lenses. Extraordinary don’t you think? We shall find out.

Design and build

The front: The face of Nokia 9 PureView reminds me of LG G6 (see at Phone Place Kenya). I am by no means accusing Nokia of anything here really, phones do look alike- some more strikingly the same than others. Anyway, it is not a bezel-less smartphone since the forehead of the Nokia 9 PureView proudly stands out housing (from the left) NOKIA branding, a selfie camera, a call speaker and to the very right dual sensors. The chin on the other hand has been left untouched and undisturbed. Facing you is its 5.99 inches display panel.

Be on the know this is a corning gorilla glass front- a touch that ensures your displays durability. The back: It is the back of this phone that makes it stand out with its web of cameras arranged in a flower shape. Five of which are real camera lenses while one is a rounded LED flash and the other is a black circle to ensure symmetry. Okay and heads up, this web of cameras will take some getting used to with the eyes. It isn’t something we have seen before so until then, it may seem a bit strange.  There is NOKIA and Android One writings on the glass back just to affirm us of Nokia’s Android One Program.  This build it has allowed Nokia 9 PureView to have IP67 rating for dust/water resistance (up to 1m for 30 mins).

Display and camera

Display

The display here is one you will really love. This has always been my reasoning, that never will a smartphone company stress emphasis on the camera performance and neglect its display features. These two go hand in hand.  Its P-OLED capacitive touchscreen sits on 92.6 cm2 estate that constitutes 5.99 inches of view area. With 1440 x 2880 pixels, 18:9 ratio (~538 ppi density) resolution this display is sharp, colorful and super impressive. P-OLED technology is just brilliant as Nokia 9 PureView will clearly display. And just because Nokia cares, it has Corning Gorilla Glass 5 slapped on to ensure display visibility.

Camera

See official video for Nokia 9 PureView 5 cameras here. Now! Nokia’s intention for the 9 PureView rests entirely on its cameras, and hopefully their performance as well. This should be pretty obvious because one time out of all smartphones ever released before it, we have never seen one phone come with so many cameras.  But what really is going on here? I will start off with the selfie camera which is an impressive 20 MP 1.0µm shooter that has 4K video recording capability. Now that’s exciting, 4K on a front facing camera just seals the deals. For this reason, I will not add more words.

Primary camera: All five cameras has functions different functions, although all of them are 5MP lenses. They all combine their talents on the subject to perform their individual functions and merge the result into one perfect and impressive image. In the words of Nokia, “the Nokia 9 PureView excels in the deepest of shadows and the brightest of lights.” Surely- we do not expect anything lesser than that real time. And thankfully expectations are satisfyingly met by these cameras. As if that were not enough, there still is software for enhancing image quality Google Photos or Adobe Lightrooms apps. The results, outstanding.

This is a list of the specification of all the Zeiss optics lenses.

  • 5x 12 MP, f/1.8, 28mm (wide), 1/2.9″, 1.25µm
  • -(2x RGB & 3x B/W cameras, working simultaneously)
  • -TOF camera
  • -Dual-LED dual-tone flash, HDR, panorama

Video recording on the Nokia 9 PureView is 2160p@30fps- that’s 4K although image stabilization is only available for 1080p@30fps HD video recording.

Performance and memory

Platform

Nokia 9 PureView runs Android 9.0 (Pie); it is of the Android One program so timely software and security patches update will be your portion should you decide to buy this flagship smartphone. Performance-wise expect a seamless and fulfilling user experience powered by a Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 (10 nm) chipset an Octa-core (4×2.8 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4×1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) CPU and an Adreno 630 GPU. With 6GB RAM it runs on there is absolutely no way you will not get the most of your device regardless of the king of user you are: time-to-time, mixed or heavy.

Battery

Its non-removable Li-Po 3320 mAh battery supports fast battery charging 18W (Quick Charge 3.0) and fast wireless charging 10W (Qi); 5W (PMA) as well. It is a decent batter capacity that should see you through a whole day or so of mixed and/or heavy usage. Time-to-time users may get more hours added on.

Pros Cons
  • Superb cameras
  • Great user experience
  • Good memory (6GB RAM) count
  • Water and dust resistance IP67 certified
  • Good sound quality
  • Relatively fewer hours of battery usage
  • No memory expansion

Nokia 9 PureView is a flagship device so expect to pay some flagship amounts should you want to own one. This is what I can confidently say about it though, the sacrifice will be well and very much worth it. Buy you a new Nokia 9 PureView today and with it, EXPLORE EVERY DETAIL.
