Nokia 3.1

Three phones were released by Nokia at a go. That is the Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1 which this article is wholly for and the Nokia 5.1. All three claim bragging for improvements over the earlier Nokia 2, 3 and 5 respectively. So this, Nokia 3.1 is an improvement of 2017’s Nokia 3, as we shall see in this article- although I will not be comparing the two. You can see Nokia 3 article at www.phoneplacekenya.com. It is one very solid smartphone as well. Anyways, with further ado let us take a quick look at the main features of Nokia 3.1 before we dive into an in depth analysis of it. Below are its key features.

Key features

This is a budget smartphone no doubt, I can already tell. Yes that it is but fro. The listing above it see it boasts having good RAM, good camera performance and it even has NFC for easy of card less transactions. These are some specs hard to find on a smartphone at this price level. Let’s take a look at its features in depth now. I feel I have included closing remarks on the second paragraph of my article, but well, that’s okay.

Design and build

The front part of this phone is made of corning gorilla glass to ensure its durability. Aluminum frames all run around it and the back is made of plastic. It measures 146.3 x 68.7 x 8.7 mm and weighs about 138 grams. Design-wise it has that typical Nokia look with the back having a vertical oriented primary camera with LED flash.

Again vertical NOKIA branding on the back just below the primary camera. The rest of the back has been kept clean. The front has a clean bottom bezel and a top bezel housing the camera (selfie), speaker and sensors. The front display panel is 5.2 inches. Oh, that top bezel also has NOKIA branding on the top right corner as well.

Display and camera

Display

Already mentioned is that it comes with a 5.2 inches display panel of 720 x 1440 pixels, 18:9 ratio (~310 ppi density) resolution. At 5.2 inches and 320 ppi it is mostly bright, bright enough to view in outdoor conditions too maybe. It is an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen that has support for multi touch and 16 M colors. At 69.8 cm2 (~69.4% screen-to-body ratio) you get a fairly large display estate.

Camera

The primary camera is a 13 MP shooter of  (f/2.0) aperture, autofocus and has an LED flash. Geo-tagging and touch focus are some of the features that come with it. It shoots videos to 720p@30fps quality. A great camera for a budget phone I have to say. The front facing camera on the other hand is an 8MP shooter. One that selfie lovers will surely keep snapping selfies with.

Performance and Memory

Platform

Strange enough is that at this price you get a smartphone that comes running on Android 8.0 (Oreo); Android One, with a promise of software updates for the next 2 years and security update for the next 3. Cool ? right? Its chipset is Mediatek MT6750, its CPU Octa-core (4×1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4×1.0 GHz Cortex-A53) and its GPU a Mali-T860MP2. These are above average specs on a budget phone. I was very impressed upon seeing them.

Storage

You get to choose a 32 GB, 3 RAM or 16 GB, 2 GB RAM version of the Nokia 3.1. Of course price will vary with the 32GB + 3GB RAM being a little more costly. Should you feel need to increase storage you can do so with a microSD, up to 256 GB.

Battery

A Non-removable Li-Ion 2990 mAh battery is what you get here. And this capacity has been tested and it does last up to a day and a half of mixed usage.

Miscellaneous

Bluetooth 4.2, A2DP, LE

NFC Yes (APAC & EMEA only)

microUSB 2.0, USB On-The-Go
