Nokia 2.1

In previous articles I mentioned this smartphone, Nokia 2.1 was released in 2018 together with Nokia 3.1 and 5.1. It is an improved version of 2017’s Nokia 2 which was an impressive  budget phone when it came out, and it still is. Anyways Nokia has yet again added to its budget smartphones’ line the 2.1 which this article focuses on. Below is a quick list of what to expect before or even after you buy this phone.

Key features

  • GSM / HSPA / LTE network technology
  • Aluminum frame, plastic back
  • Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by)
  • 5.5 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen
  • 720 x 1280 pixels resolution, 16:9 ratio (~267 ppi density)
  • Corning Gorilla Glass (unspecified version)
  • Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition); Android One
  • Qualcomm MSM8917 Snapdragon 425 chipset
  • Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU
  • Adreno 308 GPU
  • 8 GB, 1 GB RAM storage
  • microSD, up to 128 GB (dedicated slot)
  • 8 MP, autofocus, LED flash primary camera
  • 720p@30fps video recording
  • 5MP front facing camera
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, hotspot
  • Bluetooth Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, hotspot
  • microUSB 2.0, USB On-The Go
  • Front facing dual stereo speakers
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery
  • Blue/Copper, Blue/Silver, Grey/Silver color

This one mainly boasts its battery life. But we shall talk bout that somewhere within the review.

Design and build

First things first, it took me a whole lot of convincing to believe this is actually a budget smartphone. Its build quality alone made me question if it really is one. I mean, hoe can a phone this good looking be so affordable? I think I give Nokia 100% here. They have not sacrificed the design of this phone at all. Anyways its build is Aluminum frame with a plastic back, measures 153.6 x 77.6 x 9.7 mm and weighs about 174 grams. On its back is Nokia design written all over.

I mean, the primary camera and LED flash are vertically placed in the middle with NOKIA branding below them of course. While the front has a bottom bezel with a speaker whereas the top has a speaker, selfie camera, sensor and NOKIA branding on top right corner. It is a good thing having two front facing speakers, I personally prefer front facing speakers since it is hard to block them when using your phone.

Display and camera

Display

A 5.5 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen is what you get there. Most people have grown fond of big displays (like this one) on smart phones. It has support for multi touch and 16M colors. With a 720 x 1280 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~267 ppi density) resolution it is mostly a bright display with averagely okay punch. Also to mention is that this display is protected with corning gorilla glass hence durability is ensured.

Camera

Both cameras here are good at their work. Really cannot complain about either of them. With the primary shooter at 8MP and selfie one at 5MP you get some decent pics whenever you take some. I’m pretty sure photo lovers will dig this one. Video recording on the other hand kicks in at 720p@30fps.

Performance and memory

Platform

Nokia 2.1 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition); Android One straight of its package. Surprised? So was I, and so will be many. It does have a Qualcomm MSM8917 Snapdragon 425 chipset, a Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and an Adreno 308 GPU.

Storage

It has just 8GB of internal storage and runs o 1GB RAM. Storage can however be expanded up to 128GB using an SD card. There is a dedicated slot for this function so there will be no need to sacrifice one SIM.

Battery

I feel its Non-removable Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery is its key selling point mate. Why? Because this phone will last up to 2 days of mixed usage until next charge is required. Now that’s something you don’t see everyday.

This phone comes with the choice of 3 colors that’s Blue/Copper, Blue/Silver, Grey/Silver. Enjoy long lasting entertainment with Nokia 2.1. Buy one today at www.phoneplacekenya.com.
